Let the good times roll – especially if you're 96.

By Harriet Wallis

For Bob Murdoch, it was just another happy day of skiing at Alta. But it was also Bob's 96th birthday, and some of his Wild Old Bunch friends secretly surprised him with a cake and good wishes.

That's what the Wild Old Bunch is all about – friendship and skiing. Most are in their 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s. They come from all over the world to ski at Alta, and they enjoy welcoming other senior skiers.

Bob has a long history of skiing Alta. He tells of his early years when he had to hike up the mountain so that he could ski down. Those were the days before 1938 when Alta was founded as a ski area with just a single chair lift that hung so low it often had to be dug out of the snow.

Alta reveres its history. Alta also reveres its older skiers because they add depth to Alta's ski family.

Recently moved to the Area from Reno/Tahoe and Alta is my favorite ski area. Have been skiing for 50 years and looking for a fun group to ski with.

Bob, you look wonderful. You never change. Another thank you for the time YOU picked me up when I fell on the flats at the top of sunny side. Sure enjoyed our dinner at your friends house with mr. Romeo. That’s what I always called him. Karen of Ray, Joe, Don, Sue.

My father helped fabricate and install the Watson lift in 1937. I began skiing at Alta in 1960. I have the original bill from the Alta Lodge for my two day stay in 1962: hotel $9 a night;; lift ticket $4 a day - total bill $27.16!! I've enjoyed the good fortune of skiing all of the Rocky Mtn states, the Canadian Rockies and the Alps of Italy, Switzerland and Austria - but I have never experienced the equivalent of ALTA snow!!!
