Alta is located 26 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, 32 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport and 42 miles from Park City. The proximity to Salt Lake City provides an urban contrast to the wild nature of winter within the Cottonwood Canyons.
Alta sits at the terminus of Highway 210. The dead-end road is 13 miles long, crosses 64 avalanche paths and has the highest highway avalanche hazard index of any major road in the United States. It’s a stunning and beautiful ride, even for the most seasoned local, but needs to be treated with respect during the winter months.
There are times when Highway 210—Little Cottonwood Canyon Road—may be closed or restricted to travel.
Traction devices are required during severe winter weather conditions on roads throughout Utah—including Little Cottonwood Canyon. Plan ahead and follow UDOT Cottonwoods for up-to-the-minute road conditions, Highway 210 closures and Traction Law information.

Traction Law
State law requires you to have snow tires on your vehicle or carry chains in your vehicle between November 1st and May 1st. At times the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) may restrict travel on Highway 210 to snow tires, chains and 4-wheel drive only.
AWD/4WD: M + S or M/S tires
- Traction devices such as chains, snow socks, etc.
- 3 peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) tires are also acceptable and provide the most reliable traction in severe winter conditions.
2WD 3 peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) tires on all four tires
- Traction devices such as chains, snow socks, etc. are also acceptable.

UDOT Cottonwood Canyons Sticker Program
Back for another season, the UDOT Cottonwood Canyons Sticker Program is the best way to ensure your vehicle is properly equipped for winter driving on Highway 210. Stickers are not required, but this free program is a great way to double-check your traction devices before the snow starts falling.
When the Traction Law is in effect and authorities are inspecting vehicles, a UDOT Cottonwoods Sticker on your vehicle's windshield will help you move quickly through the inspection point.
Stickers are available free of charge at several tire inspection locations throughout Salt Lake City and Park City.
