Description:

JR Explorers (JRX) is a recreational skiing program for children ages 5, 6 and 7. JR Explorers consists of skiing with the same group of coaches and peers over the seven Saturday or Sunday sessions. The minimum skill level is confidently controlling speed with wedge turns on Green Trails and able to ride lifts without an adult.

Approximate coaching ratio is 1 to 6 participants. The goal is to introduce children to the fundamentals of good skiing etiquette and sportsmanship that will help them develop into well rounded, skilled skiers. The on-mountain focus is to develop quality skiing movements and skills on mostly green and some blue terrain. Emphasis is on balancing movements, parallel turning, relaxed gliding and skiing with a confident attitude. More difficult terrain is used sparingly in the lesson plan to enhance skills, boost comfort zone and create excitement. Due to the quality and popularity of this program, space is limited.

Alta Youth Club - AYC

Description:

Alta Youth Club (AYC) is a recreational skiing program for ages 7 - 16. AYC consists of skiing 14 Saturdays or 14 Sundays with a group of peers and coaches. The minimum skill level is confidently skiing parallel turns with a pole plant on Blue Trails.

The approximate coaching ratio is 1 to 8 skiers. AYC goals include creating well rounded skiers with a passion for skiing, offering a fun social opportunity and promoting good sportsmanship. The skiing experience includes skill drills, powder skiing, mogul skiing, racing and jumping. AYC coaches will often use "easier" terrain to develop quality movements and athletic skiing. More difficult terrain is used sparingly in the lesson plan to enhance skills, boost comfort zone and create excitement. Skill level and age guide appropriate activities for a group. Due to the quality and popularity of this program, space is limited.

Alta Race Team - ART

Description:

The Alta Race Team (ART) is an introductory racing program for skiers age 8 - 12 consisting of 14 Sundays with 4 additional races on Saturdays. The goal of ART is to introduce young skiers to the personal development and excitement associated with alpine ski racing. ART participant's skiing will consist of approximately 50% gate training, 25% drills and 25% directed free skiing with a coach. Terrain skied will be approximately 25% Green, 50% Blue and 25% Black. The primary skills emphasized are gliding fast on gentle terrain and carving arcs on moderate terrain. More challenging terrain is used sparingly in the lesson plan to enhance skills, boost comfort zone and create excitement.

ART racers will participate in five, local, age group, Youth Ski League Races. YSL is the USSA introductory race series for this age group. These races will take place on 4 Saturdays and 1 Sunday. Skiers may only have birth years 1998 - 2002. Parents are responsible for transporting their racer to the races. A parent is required to remain at the race through the day. Race Entry Fees are included in the ART Registration Fee. Race day lift tickets and USSA Racers License are not included and are additional.

Alta Youth Telemark (AYT)

Description:

Alta Youth Telemark (AYT) is a seven week Saturday program for skiers age 10 - 16. This program looks to inspire participants to explore the diversity of telemark skiing and produce life long skiers passionate about skiing. AYT is for strong alpine skiers new to telemark skiing as well as experienced youth telemark skiers. Minimum alpine skiing ability is consistent parallel turns with a pole plant on all blue terrain and confidently skiing black terrain. No prior telemark experience is required, although participants must provide their own tele equipment.

The program will be goal oriented, focusing weekly on one skiing skill that will result in total skier improvement by season end. The ratio of coaches to participants is approximately 1 - 8.

Alta Freeride Division - AFD

Description:

The Alta Freeride Division (AFD) is a 14 week expert-level skier program for 11 - 17 year olds. AFD is a unique program offering comprehensive exposure to big mountain freeskiing. Several intra-team competitions throughout the season are used to drive skill acquisition and mastery. AFD coaching emphasizes the IFSA judging criteria for big mountain skiing: line selection, attack, fluidity, technique and control. In addition to the competitive emphasis, the goal of AFD is to develop young skiers with experience, passion and respect for skiing as a sport and lifestyle. In pursuit of this goal AFD coaches foster the ethics of safety, sportsmanship and mastery of expert skiing skills. AFD does not offer the opportunity to travel to Big Mountain Competitions away from Alta Ski Area.
